What Happened at Ink & Aether in May

Three months ago, Ink & Aether Studios existed mostly as sketches in notebooks, half-formed systems, color palettes, publishing spreadsheets, and a growing belief that stories deserve both artistry and infrastructure.

Now, somehow, we’re here.

Books are launching. Drafts are multiplying. Characters are refusing to stay quiet. And the studio itself is beginning to take shape in ways that feel both exciting and deeply real.

For our third month in existence, May was…interesting.

In the best possible way.

A Debut Finally Reached the Shore

This month, Jade Black officially released her debut novella, Saltwater Between Us.

There is something quietly surreal about watching a story move from private document folders into readers’ hands. Cerys and Liam have lived within the studio walls for a long time now, and seeing readers connect with them has been one of the highlights of the month.

At the same time, Jade hasn’t slowed down. While Saltwater Between Us made its debut, she’s already deep into edits for her upcoming full-length novel. That balance between release and revision has become part of the rhythm here at Ink & Aether: celebrating the milestone while continuing to build what comes next.

One story reaching readers is never the finish line. It’s the foundation for the next one.

The Vale & Stone Fog Is Rolling In

Meanwhile, J.P. White has been waist-deep in final reviews for The Case of the Ember Mill Haunting, the second installment in the Vale & Stone: Consulting Detectives series.

Early feedback has been remarkably consistent: readers are loving Cressida and Miles even more the second time around.

That matters.

One of the quiet challenges in a mystery series is deepening the partnership at the heart of it without losing the atmosphere that made readers fall in love with the world in the first place. Ember Mill seems to be threading that needle beautifully. It leans a little darker, a little stranger, and a little more haunted than Book One in all the right ways.

The fog is thicker this time. And apparently, so are the emotional consequences. We cannot wait for readers to step back into Blackvale and uncover what’s waiting there.

Indigo Winter Has Returned From the Void

As for Indigo Winter…she has finally resurfaced from her latest galactic expedition.

Barely.

She’s currently locked away in her metaphorical writing chamber working on her debut novel slated for 2027, and according to studio reports, the situation includes:

• explosions

• creature-adjacent shenanigans

• socially awkward moments, but amplified by space

• morally questionable levels of chaos

• and at least one or two moments where everyone involved collectively asks, “What just happened?”

In other words, everything appears to be proceeding normally.

What we can say is this: the worldbuilding is expanding rapidly, the cast is becoming delightfully unmanageable, and the larger foundations of what will eventually become a world you can’t wait to revisit are beginning to lock into place.

This is one of the things we value deeply at Ink & Aether. Not rushing the work. Not forcing stories into timelines they are not ready for. But building worlds carefully enough that readers can feel the weight of their history long before page one begins.

Building the Studio While Building the Stories

Beyond the books themselves, May was also a month of infrastructure.

Newsletter systems. Branding refinement. Reader pathways. Long-term publishing plans. Quiet backend work that most people never see, but which matters just as much as the writing itself.

Creative work needs room to breathe. But sustainable creative work needs structure. That balance sits at the center of everything we are building here.

Ink & Aether was never meant to be a sprint built on constant urgency. We are far more interested in longevity than speed. In thoughtful growth rather than noise. In creating stories, systems, and reader experiences that can continue evolving years from now.

This is the work.

And while May occasionally felt chaotic, it also felt clarifying. The studio is growing. The stories are growing with it. And little by little, the vision is becoming tangible.

Looking Ahead to June

Now for the part we’re especially excited about.

June is shaping up to be a very full month at Ink & Aether.

We’ll be sharing more from The Case of the Ember Mill Haunting as release preparations continue, including behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of Vale & Stone. There may also be a few surprises waiting in the fog.

Jade’s upcoming projects are continuing to move forward steadily behind the scenes, and we have every intention of keeping the momentum going there as well.

And somewhere deep in the stars, Indigo is still causing problems on purpose. As always.
