Independence and Indie Publishing: Why We Do What We Do

Child in sunglasses raises an American flag against a bright sky, seen from below.

250 years is a long time to be telling stories on purpose.

We think about independence a lot at Ink & Aether Studios — not as a slogan, but as the actual mechanism behind everything we publish. Nobody told us a cozy gothic mystery and an epic fantasy romance and a space opera needed to live under different roofs. Nobody told us representation was optional or that a found-family space opera needed permission to exist. We decided, and then we built it.

That's the throughline between this holiday and what we do every day: the freedom to tell the story you actually believe in, on the terms that make it good, instead of the terms that make it easy.

We're not drawing a straight line between the founding of a country and the founding of a small press — that would be a stretch, and a little much for a Saturday. But the spirit translates: build the thing yourself, on your own terms, because nobody's going to hand you permission to do it any other way.

Happy 4th. Here's to 250 more years of people deciding to build things.
